City Honors School and Bezos Institute Collaborate to present
Passion in Progress Festival
Buffalo, New York – On March 25th high school students from all over the City will gather to participate in an ideas festival highlighting global, local, and personal aspects of “The Big Picture”. Through interactive workshops, a multimedia exhibit called 25 Blocks, and a keynote address, students will gain an understanding of their own goals, the richness of their community, and the issues of the world at large.
The exhibit 25 Blocks is modeled on a concept executed in Phoenix, Arizona in 2010. Here in Buffalo, 25 professional and student photographers are invited to submit their portrayal of one city block. Likewise, 25 professional and student writers will capture the essence of a single block through prose, poetry, or fiction. The submissions will be exhibited in a temporary gallery at the Festival, where the artists will be available to discuss their work.
Simultaneously, three workshops will be held to focus on the personal. In one, Dr. William Duax, Distinguished Scientist of the Hauptman Woodward Institute will give a talk entitled: “Don’t Underestimate Your Potential.” Sanjay Connare, Founder/CEO of Connare Tech Inc. will discuss: “Failure - a Catalyst for Success.” Laura Flumerfeldt will lead participants through a process to “Create a Vision Board.” This left-brain activity is designed to elicit a personal narrative that may help the student uncover a pathway for their talents.
The keynote speaker is former Amnesty International Secretary General Irene Zubaida Khan, a visiting professor at the UB Law School Human Rights Center.
The Festival begins at 5:30 PM at City Honors School, 186 East North Street and runs until 9:30 PM. Refreshments will be provided.
